Milos, the pirates island

The day started off at 6 am in Switzerland. We took the airplane in Gevena and flew with Aegen to Athen. The airport was quite empty compared to 2019 but still more busy than early 2020.

In Athen you can be randomly picked for a PCR test prior to luggage claim.  After recovering our bags we checked in once more to fly with Sky express to Milos island.

The airplane was a very tiny one and the flight really short! (45min door to door). Once we landed in milos we recovered our luggage and went out of the airport to recover our rental car.

Our rental car was never seen as they closed a couple of weeks ago and we were left alone at the airport. When the security guy left and the last car arrived to pick up another customer, we gently asked if they could drop us at the closest city: Adamas.

Note here: always check that the rental car company is open and the communication between the webpage provider and your rental company is up to date😉

Once in Adamas, we rented a car at Union car rental and made ourselves ready to hit the road for 14 min.

We arrived in Pollonia and stayed the whole week at Millia Gi Suites. This apartment is perfectly located in Pollonia, close to all main restaurants and only one hour away to the furthest city.

About Milos

Milos is a small and beautiful island located in the center of the world (Mediterranean), the middle of the sea Aegean and finally, in the middle of the Silk Road.

Back in the days, these straight lines were used by freight ships sailing from Africa to Europe and Asia. The winds were always blowing along two directions, one during winter allowing the boats to go one way and one during summer the other way to come back. But all paths led along Milos island. The pirates having understood that quickly established camp on that island and sheltered the boats on one or the other side of the island depending on the winds, allowing to have always a vantage point to attack the freight boats. This was the Tortuga of the Mediteranean sea ;D

Another amazing fact about Milos is its color! As opposed to Santorini, the dark/black island of Greece, Milos is completely white! Or as the locals say, a Tiramisu! The island has 3 distinct colors or layers: white, caramel and brown/dark. The reason for this color is that Milos originated from layers of dead planktons and an erupting underwater volcano!

Consequently, while diving around Milos and visiting some beaches, you will find pristine white rock formations!

Now, this brings us to learning a bit more about where to stay and what to do!

The island does have a few hotels but most of the rooms you will find are apartments and suites to rent. One of these is Milia Gi Suits (where we stayed).

Milia Gi Suits is a beautiful apartment, well furnished with a small kitchen and balcony, located in Pollonia. For a small upgrade you can even have a jacuzzi on your balcony!

Also the owner is really awesome, you’ll get the best recommendations for restaurants and activities!

This brings us to the next point, What to do on the Island?

During your visit in Milos you can explore ancient Roman and Greek ruins. Have a tour at the catacombs of Milos and its ancient marble theater, quite a beautiful location and landscape!

As the roads are really bad and a great part of the island can’t be reached by car, you might wanna hop on an organized boat tour to explore the south south-west coast. You can also rent a quad which might be another option. Trust me, the Fiat Panda does not handle well these roads ^^’

We organized a boat tour with excellent yachting from Adamas to around the island!

There are multiple beaches you can explore! the captain and the crew were awesome! we had a wonderful trip around the island!

Among them you can find:

Papafragas

This beach was once probably among the most extraordinary beaches of Milos. However, because of land erosion and poor maintenance, it became very hazardous to explore every bits of it. The beach has two areas: one main carved within the cliffs of papafragas and which you can only access while walking down a quite tricky path, and another one that you can very easily access and which also has a beautiful stone arches next to it.

Note: don’t jump in it, I tried, just don’t 😅

Sarakiniko

One of the most famous beaches in Milos. Sarakiniko is the proof that the island has emerged from the deep sea. The beach is extremely white and the crystal clear water will create some beautiful contrasts.

Firopotamos

A beautiful beach isolated within a cove and well protected from the south west wind. The beach is small yet beautiful and has crystal clear water. On the left side there are some beautiful houses with blue colored balconies and doors.

Paliochori and Aghia Kiriaki

Two beaches on the south east side of the island, they are quite close from each other and can be reached through the same road more or less. These two beaches have also umbrellas and seats. Aghia Kiriaki was my favorite because of its white stones.

Probates and Firiplaka

Two beaches with crystal clear water. They also have umbrellas and seats. Firiplaka is probably my favorite out of both.

Tsigrado

A famous beach because of its difficult accessibility. The way down to the beach is dug in the rocks and requires to climb down to leaders while holding a rope to not slip. Definitely a cool experience =]

There are also some beautiful villages with very scenic landscapes such as:

Adamas

Adamas is kind of the main touritic city of the island. It is also where you will be able to rent cars and boat tours as it hosts the main harbor. There are quite a lot of restaurants and bars around that place too.

Klima

Klima hasn’t really a beautiful beach so to say, however the way the village is built and it’s location makes it a very scenic destination. Klima is a patchwork of colors, with multiple houses built right next to the water. When I say right next to it, I mean it literally. When there are waves and strong SW wind, you have to remove your shoes to reach the entry of the house and walking along the seaside.

There is one restaurant and the rest are RB&Bs or residences.

Mandrakia

A nice beach with a very scenic small village next to it. Few houses, a small harbor and a quite good restaurant.

Plaka

To me, the most beautiful city of Milos. It is well maintained, a beautiful patchwork of blue and white, narrow streets and pink/white flowers everywhere. Plaka has many restaurants and small shops and hosts one old castle ruin with a church. It is also one of the highest points on the west side from where you can enjoy the sunset.

Pollonia

A beautiful coastal village on the far north eastern side of the island. There you can rent scooters and quads. It also has some good restaurants and bars. We stayed there at Millia Gi Suits during our week.

Good restaurants we tried:

Enalion: a very good fish restaurant!

Armenaki: a good wine bar with great food!

Medusa: a restaurant with a view that you can’t beat!

O’Hamos!: A great tavern we never had the chance to explore (as it closed the evening we arrived) but which has ben recommended by half the island ^^
