Face to face with Giants

Saxer lucke is probably the second place you can’t miss if you love mountains and breathtaking landscapes.

Located at the border between Canton St. Gallen and Appenzell on the Alpstein mountain, that “pass” can be reached through multiple routs depending your ambitions.

The simplest and shortest way:  Take a cable car directly to Staubern from Frümsenbergstrasse (around 36 CHF both ways) and hike along one face of the mountain up to the Saxer-Lucker hut (around 1h20 for average hikers).

Longer itinerary: Take the cable car from Brulisau to Hoher Kasten (a restaurant that turns on itself, fancy stuff) and hike to Saxer-Lucke via Staubern.

Other trails are possible such as multi-day hikes and so on to cross and explore the whole area!

As we did two hikes at different places in one day, we chose the short option, however, I plan to go back and combine that trail with the visit of both lakes: Fälensee and Sämtisersee.

The hike from Staubern is very simple. There is little hight difference (around 300 m)  and it follows a mountain ridge with a breathtaking view on both lakes and the surrounding mountains.

The last part that really puts you on the ridge with both faces exposed is very impressive and the view simply unforgettable. I can definitely recommend to take your lunch with you and eat it right there while enjoying the view!

If you go early enough, you could also add the hike down and back through Fälensee that lies right at the bottom of the Saxer-Lucke.
