Aescher and Messmer Hutte with a plunge in Seealpsee

Here I propose a beautiful two-days hike without time pressure and no extreme elevation gains. We picked that itinerary because we had to commute the morning from Shaffhausen, but still wanted to enjoy Alpstein as much as possible.

The journey starts at the Wasserauen-Ebenalp station where you will take the cabines to reach the top of the mountain. As we arrived around 2 pm, we stopped at the famous Aescher-Wildkirchli restaurant for a quick and tasty meal! We then started the hike to our next stop, Berggasthaus Mesmer. There are two possible itineraries to reach that destination:

  • One with a bit more altitude gain through Schäfler – Steckenberg to Mesmer – total hiking time of 2 h 10
  • One with less elevation gain through Füessler – Weesen – Altenalp – Steckenberg to Mesmer – total hiking time of 1 h 35

We picked the 1 h 35 hike as we wanted to have time for pictures and arrive smoothly at the Mesmer hut (you can book it here per email).

The place is located between two towering mountains and offers a beautiful view on the Santis summit and the Seealpsee. That place is a little heaven in the mountains!

Food is really good, it is filled with goats, cows and donkeys…what do you want more?

After a good night rest, we walked down to Seealpsee where we bought fresh goat cheese and enjoyed a short walk around the lake.

We finished the journey by walking all the way down to the car park.
